San Diego Police say their investigation has revealed a woman hit by two police cruisers on Saturday night in Hillcrest was “sprinting” into the street at mid block.
Police said two cruisers were heading west in the 100 block of West Washington Street and responding to a burglary call just after 11 p.m. The call did not warrant the use of emergency lights and sirens, but the two vehicles were marked.
The two cruisers were in the left lane when the victim entered the road and was struck by the first police car. The second police car swerved to the right to avoid the collision and struck the female who had been pushed into the right lane.
A witness described the pedestrian’s actions as “sprinting out onto the street.” The investigation determined the pedestrian tried to cross the street mid-block in an unmarked area. Police said the speed of the cars does not appear to be a factor in the accident.
Both officers immediately stopped, rendered first aid and called for paramedics. Paramedics arrived and transported the victim to UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest, where she later died.
The investigation is continuing.
