The San Diego Police Department plans a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint somewhere in the city limits on Friday night.
Traffic Division officers will be stopping drivers between 11 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday to check for alcohol or marijuana impairment as well as proper licensing. The checkpoint location will be chosen based on previous accidents and arrests.
Checkpoints like this are routinely announced in advance without revealing the location.
“The deterrent effect of high-visibility enforcement using both DUI checkpoints and DUI Saturation Patrols has proven to lower the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol- or drug-impaired crashes,” police said in a statement.
The department urged San Diegans planning to visit a bar or restaurant on Friday night to have a designated driver or use a ridesharing service.
