A man fatally shot this week in a Grantville-area neighborhood was publicly identified Thursday.

Patrol officers responding to reports of gunfire in the 6200 block of Holabird Street shortly before 3 a.m. Tuesday found 35-year-old Mario Bullard of San Diego lying in the street, suffering from at least one gunshot wound, according to police. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene a short time later.

A possible suspect was detained nearby and questioned by detectives, but was released pending further investigation, Lt. Matt Dobbs said.

An unidentified person believed to be the shooter ran off to the west on Vandever Avenue toward Mission Gorge Road following the gunfire. He was described as roughly 5 feet 6 inches tall and wearing black pants, a black hooded sweatshirt with a white logo on the front and a backpack.

“The investigation of the circumstances surrounding the homicide continues,” Dobbs said Thursday.
