A man who allegedly pulled a knife on a woman in a parking lot at Fashion Valley mall and stole her car six weeks ago was behind bars Tuesday following his arrest at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Victor Resendiz, 34, was taken into custody Monday while crossing into the United States from Tijuana at San Ysidro Port of Entry, according to San Diego police.
On the afternoon of March 25, Resendiz allegedly approached the 57- year-old victim from behind outside a JCPenney store on the west side of the Friars Road shopping center, put the blade of a knife to her neck and ordered her to give him her wallet and keys.
The woman complied and was not injured during the crime, Lt. Martha Sainz said.
Within several days, police found the stolen 2017 Nissan Sentra abandoned in a downtown neighborhood off Imperial Boulevard. It has since been returned to the victim, the lieutenant said.
Detectives identified the suspect via surveillance-camera images and other physical evidence, according to Sainz.
Resendiz was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of carjacking. He was being held on $75,000 bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
