A man was shot early Sunday morning after a confrontation in a neighborhood near Westfield Plaza Bonita, and police have few leads.

It happened about 5 a.m. off Stockman Street and Cagle Street, according to National City Police Officer Damian Ballardo.

“The victim had just returned from Mexico and saw two guys apparently either tampering with or trying to take something out of his car,” Ballardo said.

One or both of the men shot the victim when he tried to confront them.

Ballardo said the victim was taken to a hospital with two gunshot wounds, one to his chest and one to his arm. His injuries weren’t believed to be life-threatening.

The suspects escaped, and police had no descriptions for them.

“We have no idea who they are,” Ballardo said.
