A man armed with a handgun robbed a 7-Eleven convenience store Thursday morning in the Hillcrest area, police said.

It happened around 5:40 a.m. at the 7-Eleven at 126 Washington St., according to San Diego police.

The thief walked into the store, pulled out a handgun and demanded money from the clerk, said Officer Sarah Foster.

After the clerk complied, the man, believed to be in his 30s, fled on foot in an unknown direction with an undisclosed amount of cash, Foster said.

No detailed suspect descriptions were immediately available.

Robbery detectives were investigating the incident.
