Two people were killed when their hang gliders apparently collided near La Jolla on Saturday afternoon.

San Diego Lifeguards confirmed that two people were killed in the accident, which happened around 2:40 p.m. over Black’s Beach near the Torrey Pines Gliderport.

Reports from witnesses indicated the two gliders struck each other in midair and then crashed into a cliff.

A San Diego Fire-Rescue Department helicopter was dispatched to recover the bodies.

One pilot, a 61-year-old man, was reportedly helping train a 43-year-old student when the student made a sharp turn and ran into the other glider.
