Police said Sunday they believe a man shot and killed his stepmother in Chula Vista on Saturday.

Just after 1:30 p.m. Saturday, a woman called 911 and told dispatchers her uncle had just called and told her he had killed his father’s wife, Chula Vista Police Sgt. David Oyos said.

She reported her uncle was on his way to her house in the 500 block of Arizona Street.

Police responded to detain the man, identified as 55-year-old Norberto Sanchez, while other officers headed to a house in the 1100 block of Oasis Avenue, where Sanchez said the crime occurred, Oyos said.

When officers arrived, they found an injured woman with gunshot wounds. Paramedics were called to the scene, but the woman succumbed to her injuries, Oyos said.

She was identified as 65-year-old Maria Esther Gonzalez.

Sanchez was jailed on suspicion of homicide. Detectives were continuing to investigate the death.
