
A San Diego Police officer and a suspect he was arresting were seriously injured Thursday morning when they were both struck by a vehicle on Rosecrans Street in the Midway District.
Emergency crews responded shortly before 5 a.m. to the accident near the intersection of Rosecrans and Midway Drive, San Diego Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Rick Ballard said.
Police said the officer was checking on a report of vandalism and began chasing a suspect on foot through the area. The officer had caught up with the suspect and was making an arrest when the two were struck.
Both patients were taken to hospitals in critical condition, Ballard said, adding that one went to UC San Diego Medical Center and the other went to Scripps Mercy Hospital. The officer was is stable condition, while the suspect had life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene.
Police shut down southbound Rosecrans Street between Midway Drive and Sports Arena Boulevard for the crash investigation.
