Firefighters extinguished a small brush fire that broke out Friday morning near apartments in the Grant Hill area, authorities said.

Dispatchers received a call around 6:45 a.m. from a person reporting that he heard an explosion and saw smoke coming from an area in the 2800 block of Island Avenue, San Diego police Sgt. Michael Stirk said.

Firefighters arrived at the scene around 10 minutes later and quickly extinguished the fire, which was burning brush near a homeless encampment, San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesman Jose Ysea said.

Officers evacuated residents from several apartment units on Market Street and Island Avenue for a short time as crews battled the blaze, Stirk said.

No injuries were reported and the fire didn’t spread to any structures, Ysea said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
