A 32-year-man being held at San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of assault died after he was discovered in “apparent medical distress” Thursday morning, according to a sheriff’s official.

Deputies found the man collapsed inside his housing cell around 8:17 a.m. after another inmate alerted jail personnel, according to sheriff’s Lt. Michael Blevins.

The man did not appear injured, but he was unresponsive; CPR was initiated and he was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 9:28 a.m., Blevins said.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death, Blevins continued.

One week ago, a 56-year-old inmate was stricken by an apparent medical crisis in a holding cell at Vista Detention Facility and died of unknown causes a short time later.
