A midday structure fire spread through part of a South Bay duplex Monday, leaving one resident displaced.
The non-injury blaze in the 1300 block of East Fifth Street in National City was reported about 12:30 p.m., according to fire department officials.
A neighbor rescued a dog from the otherwise unoccupied building prior to the arrival of firefighters, who were able to confine the flames to one of the two adjoining units, said NCFD Battalion Chief Mark Beveridge.
Police cordoned off one block of the street as a precaution while crews worked to subdue the blaze, which took about 25 minutes.
The cause of the fire was under investigation, Beveridge said.
