A 53-year-old motorcyclist was seriously hurt in Escondido Sunday when his bike collided with a Jeep Grand Cherokee that then fled the scene.

The crash occurred at 4:45 p.m. near the intersection of Washington Avenue and Hickory Street, Escondido Police Lt. Mike Kearney said.

Based on the initial investigation and witnesses, the motorcycle was heading west on Washington Avenue when the Jeep tried to make a left turn out of a private driveway at 412 E. Washington Ave., Kearney said.

The motorcyclist hit the Jeep and was ejected from the bike, Kearney continued. The other driver then fled the scene.

The motorcyclist, who was from San Diego, suffered serious injuries to his legs and was sent to a hospital and then immediately into surgery, Kearney said.

The person’s gender and condition were not immediately released by police.

The hit-and-run vehicle was described as a dark green Jeep Grand Cherokee with black primer paint spots and missing or damaged front-end equipment.

Anyone who knows the whereabouts of this hit-and-run driver or who witnessed the crash was asked to call Escondido Officer Frank Huston at (760) 839-4423.
