Authorities are searching for a man who attempted to rob a Wells Fargo branch in Escondido Tuesday using a demand note, but fled before he was given any money.

The failed robbery happened shortly before 5:40 p.m. at the Wells Fargo near the intersection of West Valley Parkway and West Ninth Avenue, just west of Interstate 15, Escondido Police Sgt. Janice Kolhof said.

The would-be robber handed a teller a note demanding cash but fled before receiving any money, Kolhof said, adding that no weapon was seen during the robbery attempt.

The suspect was described as a roughly 6-foot tall white man. He was last seen wearing a dark beanie, all gray clothing and a surgical mask covering his mouth and nose.

Escondido police were investigating the attempted robbery along with the FBI.

Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call the San Diego FBI office at (858) 320-1800 or San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. Tipsters can also submit information online at tips.fbi.gov/contact or sdcrimestoppers.org.
