The first announced DUI checkpoint of the new year is set for Friday night somewhere in the San Diego City limits.

Officers with the San Diego Police Department‘s traffic division will be stopping drivers between 11 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday to check for alcohol or marijuana impairment and proper licensing.

Police said the location of the checkpoint will be chosen based on previous DUI accidents and arrests.

The checkpoints are regularly announced in advance because of the deterrent effect on people who might drink or smoke and then drive.
