The vehicle hit the man as he was crossing the street in the 9100 block of Three Seasons Road shortly before 10 a.m., according to San Diego police.
Medics took the victim to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla for treatment of life-threatening head trauma, said Sgt. Robert Hawkins.
The 36-year-old woman driving the car that hit the man remained at the scene, said SDPD public-affairs Officer Joshua Hodge.
There were no indications that intoxication played a role in the accident, Hodge said.
Traffic-accident investigators were working to determine who was at fault.
No other injuries were reported.
