A fire of unknown origin heavily damaged a home in a rural East County neighborhood Monday and left a resident hospitalized.
The blaze in the 11300 block of Moreno Avenue in Lakeside was reported about 2 p.m., according to the Lakeside Fire Protection District.
Passers-by broke windows out of the burning single-story residence and tried in vain to extinguish the flames with a garden hose prior to the arrival of firefighters, LFPD Division Chief John Hisaw said.
Crews rescued a woman they found unconscious in a back bedroom, Hisaw said. Medics took her to UCSD Medical Center in San Diego in undisclosed condition. No other injuries were reported.
It took firefighters about 15 minutes to subdue the blaze, which caused an estimated $150,000 worth of damage to the structure and contents.
The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
