A 29-year-old man was jailed Wednesday on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter in connection with a South Bay freeway crash that left another motorist dead.

John Thomas Kallis of San Diego was behind the wheel of a 2012 Toyota Yaris sedan that collided with a 2004 Nissan Frontier pickup on northbound Interstate 805 near Bonita Road in Chula Vista about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The impact sent the Nissan veering into a Caltrans construction zone, where it slammed into the back of a parked dump truck, said CHP public-affairs Officer Jake Sanchez.

Medics took the driver of the Frontier, a 55-year-old San Diego man, to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name was withheld pending family notification.

Kallis was booked into San Diego Central Jail about 7 Wednesday morning, according to Sheriff’s Department records. He was being held on $750,000 bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Friday afternoon.
