A suspected drunken motorist crashed her SUV head-on into another vehicle early Monday while driving her three young daughters through Rancho Bernardo, seriously injuring her children along with herself and the other driver, authorities said.
The 29-year-old mother was driving to the east on the westbound side of Camino del Norte when her Chevrolet Suburban collided with an oncoming Jeep Liberty near Paseo Montanoso about 4:30 a.m., according to San Diego police.
The wreck left the woman’s 10-month-old child with life-threatening head trauma, her 2-year-old with facial injuries and her 8-year-old with a broken leg, Officer Dino Delimitros said.
The children were transported to Rady Children’s Hospital.
The girls’ mother, for her part, suffered a fractured hip in the crash, and the driver of the Jeep, a 57-year-old man, sustained facial fractures.
“The driver of the Suburban is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol,” Delimitros said.
The woman’s name was not released.
The accident left the westbound lanes of the street closed along with a nearby Interstate 15 off-ramp through late Monday morning.
