Two people were able to escape uninjured when their small plane went down shortly after takeoff from the Ramona Airport Saturday morning, authorities said.
The plane crashed about 10 minutes before 8 a.m. just west of the airport, San Diego County Sheriff’s Lt. Arnold Aldana said.
Firefighters arrived at the crash site to find the aircraft fully engulfed in flames in a field off Rangeland Road and Highland Valley Road, according to Cal Fire Capt. Issac Sanchez.
Crews were able to get the fire out within about 10 minutes, and the fire did not spread to nearby vegetation, Sanchez said. Both occupants of the plane were accounted for and unhurt, he said.
The Ramona Airport couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
