A pedestrian was struck and killed by a car Wednesday while he was attempting to cross an Oak Park street, police said.

It happened shortly after 4:45 a.m. in the 200 block of 54th Street, San Diego Police Officer Steve Bourasa said.

A 57-year-old man was attempting to cross 54th Street from the west curb to the east curb outside of a crosswalk when a 2010 Nissan Altima driven by a 25-year-old woman struck him as he stepped into the right lane of southbound 54th street, Bourasa said.

The man was transported to a hospital with serious head injuries, where he was later pronounced dead, Bourasa said. The victim’s name was withheld pending family notification.

The woman driving the Nissan remained at the scene and cooperated with officers, Bourasa said.

Intoxication was not believed to have been a factor in the collision, Bourasa said.

Officers from the San Diego Police Department’s traffic division were investigating the collision.
