It took firefighters about 20 minutes Tuesday to extinguish a fire that heavily damaged two sheds in the Encanto-area and no injuries were reported.
The sheds in the 1200 block of Stamen Street became engulfed in flames for unknown reasons shortly before noon, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
“(Firefighters) found two large sheds or outbuildings that were on fire from two different residences,” Batallion Chief Jeff Mitchell said. “It took them 14 minutes to knock down the fire on both sheds.”
One of the sheds collapsed during the firefight and nearly fell on top of some of the firefighters, he said.
No one was home at the time of the fire, he said.
Jonathan Daplas was out shopping with his mother when he came home to the fire.
“I noticed there was a big cloud of dark smoke and I had a feeling it was going to be part of my street where my mama lives,” he said. “So I rushed in there, into the house, open the garage. I immediately when to the backyard and just spray the water in the patio so it won’t spread the fire until the fire department comes.”
The shed contained a lot of mementos, toys from when he and his siblings were kids, Daplas said. His dad’s tools were also in the shed.
The cause of the fire was under investigation and the damages were unknown at this time.
