A sheriff’s deputy was hospitalized Monday after he sustained an injury during a Lakeside chase that led to the arrest of a suspect who fled a traffic stop.
The chase began around 2:15 p.m. as deputies from the Lakeside substation were conducting traffic enforcement at Ashwood Street and Willows Road, according to sheriff’s Sgt. John Delocht.
During the operation, the deputies watched a vehicle run a stop sign and subsequently pulled the driver over near El Capitan High School. A passenger jumped out of the stopped vehicle and fled on foot, onto school grounds, according to Delocht.
School was being released at the time of the incident and a temporary campus lockdown was put in place, Delocht said.
Deputies chased the man on foot, and he peacefully surrendered a short distance away. He was identified as Benito Villa, 41. No students were harmed or endangered during the incident, according to Delocht.
In addition to the warrant, Villa was arrested and booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of trespassing, resisting a peace officer, and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Delocht.
During the incident, a deputy injured his leg and was transported to the hospital. The extent of the injury is unknown at this time.
