Border Patrol agents in Campo arrested a Mexican man in possession of more than 52 pounds of methamphetamine after a dog sniffed out the drugs in the car’s gas tank.

When a silver 2006 Nissan Maxima approach the checkpoint on Interstate 8 on Wednesday morning, the dog alerted agents.

The driver of the Nissan was referred to secondary inspection and agents discovered 45 bundles of meth worth an estimated $183,000.

The driver was a 35-year-old man with permanent resident status. The narcotics in his car were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration. The Border Patrol seized the vehicle.
