The man was skating to the east in the 1300 block of West Mission Bay Drive shortly after 8:30 p.m. Sunday when he fell off his board and began chasing after it as it rolled away, according to San Diego police.
After running onto the opposite side of the street, he was struck by a westbound Nissan sedan driven by a 25-year-old man, said Officer John Buttle.
The victim, whose name was not released, was transported to a hospital for treatment of severe injuries and is not expected to survive, said SDPD Sgt. Thomas Sullivan.
Alcohol or drugs were not thought to be factors in the accident, according to Buttle.
Updated at 4:25 p.m. Sept. 17, 2018. An earlier version of this story incorrectly said the skateboarder had died.
