Five people were shot and killed in Bakersfield on Wednesday afternoon by a gunman who then killed himself as sheriff’s deputies approached.

The Bakersfield Californian reported that the shooter went into a trucking business with his wife and confronted another man, shooting him and then turning on his wife.

The shooter killed another man at the trucking business, then went to a nearby home and shot another man and woman.

The shooter carjacked a vehicle and fled, but was stopped by deputies and killed himself as they approached.

Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood described the event as a “mass shooting” but noted that all the victims appeared to be known to the gunman.
