Authorities Tuesday identified a 41-year-old pedestrian who died when he was struck by a car on Interstate 5 in the South Bay after witnesses reported seeing him jump from a moving car and run toward highway lanes.
Christopher Allan Bingham of Chula Vista was jumping a barrier onto the northbound lanes of I-5 when a 37-year-old woman driving a 2007 Lexus sedan hit him near Civic Center Drive in National City shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday, according to California Highway Patrol and the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Witnesses reported seeing Bingham exit his Kia sedan while it was traveling at highway speeds on southbound I-5, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office. He then got up, ran toward northbound I-5 travel lanes and was struck by the Lexus sedan as he jumped a barrier south of Plaza Boulevard.
Paramedics were dispatched, but Bingham was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office. Bingham was the only person in the Kia sedan.
The Lexus driver remained on scene and cooperated with officers, California Highway Patrol public-affairs Officer Jake Sanchez said.
CHP officers were investigating the collision.
