A man was struck and killed Sunday night after his vehicle went off Interstate 5 in National City and he attempted to run across the freeway.
The initial crash was reported at 9:47 p.m. on the northbound freeway at Civic Center/Harbor Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Witnesses said a man wearing light-colored clothing jumped out of the driver’s side and ran across northbound lanes of traffic.
The northboundfreeway was shut down just south of Civic Center with all traffic diverted off at Harbor Drive. Lanes were reopened at 11:40 p.m., the CHP said.
