A sedan and a big rig collided and burst into flames on Interstate 8 near Fletcher Hills Friday, creating a spectacular fireball and tangling traffic.
The collision, which left the sedan wedged underneath the tractor-trailer, occurred about 5:30 p.m. on the eastbound side of the freeway, near Main Street in El Cajon, according to the California Highway Patrol. According to the CHP incident log, the sedan and big rig were fully engulfed in flames.
The fiery wreck forced the closure of three of the four eastbound traffic lanes on the interstate at the crash site and led to heavy congestion in the area, the CHP reported.
As of 8 p.m., crews were still on scene investigating the crash. The big rig driver was apparently uninjured in the crash, but there is no word on the sedan occupant(s).
