A man struck and killed by a vehicle on Interstate 5 north of Oceanside over the weekend had been attempting to cross the freeway on foot, the California Highway Patrol reported Monday.

CHP officers responded to a report of a collision on the I-5 at the Cockleburr Road overpass, a couple miles north of the Oceanside Harbor Drive exit, about 4:20 a.m. Saturday.

The victim was trying to cross traffic lanes of I-5 from east to west – – why was unclear — and was struck in the No. 3 lane of the northbound side of the freeway by a woman driving a 1999 Mitsubishi, CHP Officer Kevin Smale said.

The pedestrian, whose name was withheld pending notification of his family, died at the scene, Smale said.

Freeway lanes were intermittently affected by the aftermath of the crash until around 7 that morning.
