A 38-year-old male bicyclist riding in Mission Valley took a bad fall Friday and had to be transported to an area hospital with serious back injuries, according to police.

The man was riding southbound in the 6200 block of Mission Center Road around 6:30 p.m. when he crashed, according to the San Diego Police Department.

Another male bicyclist was riding with the victim and told a reporter at the scene that his friend could not feel his legs after the crash.

Thick patches of pine needles in the bike lane at the crash site may be to blame for the wreck, but officials did not confirm. San Diego Police Traffic Division is investigating the crash.
