The bomb squad was called to a construction area in University Heights on Tuesday where workers have found what appears to be a piece of military ordnance, police said.
The ordnance was found around 11 a.m. at Georgia Street and Lincoln Avenue, according to according to San Diego Police Department.
As a precaution, officers closed down the immediate area while the ordnance-handling personnel worked to safely remove the object for disposal.
The ordinance turned out to be an inert armor-piercing round that posed no public-safety hazard, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
Bomb-squad personnel impounded the device and cleared the scene around 1 p.m.
