The blaze began spreading in a part of the Marine Corps station known as the Hotel Training Area about 9:15 a.m., said base spokesman Capt. Luke Weaver. The cause of the fire was not immediately clear, he said.
As of midafternoon, the flames had scorched about 18 acres, according to Camp Pendleton public affairs. Cal Fire crews were helping military firefighters extinguish the blaze, the state agency reported.
