A bomb squad was called when a man at an Escondido Starbucks Sunday allegedly told employees he had an explosive in his bag, police said.

The incident began about 6:15 a.m. at the Starbucks near Valley Parkway and Auto Park Way, Escondido police Sgt. Craig Miller said.
David Scherz, 31, who is believed to be homeless, had been asked to leave the store after he allegedly told staff members that he was carrying a bomb inside a large duffel bag, Miller said.
Police responding to the coffee shop spotted the suspect walking east on Valley Parkway near Interstate 15. When they confronted him, he “made some strange statements” about what was in the bag, Miller said.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Bomb/Arson Unit responded and detonated their own explosives to destroy the man’s bag and eliminate the threat, but investigators later determined there was no explosive inside.
Scherz was being held at the Vista Detention Center.
