A woman who allegedly carjacked a vehicle — with two young children inside it — was arrested Monday as she attempted to cross the border into Mexico, according to San Diego Police.

The incident began shortly after noon when a father left his 3-year-old boy and 8-year-old girl inside his Hyundai, with the engine and air conditioner running, while he went into a Lincoln Park business at 220 Euclid Ave., according to SDPD Officer Dino Delimitros.

With the children unattended, a witness watched as a woman got into the car and drove off with the siblings, Delimitros said.

The father called police and within minutes the man’s daughter called 911 to say she and her little brother had been kidnapped.

Chula Vista police and border patrol officials were made aware of the situation, and about 30 minutes later the woman was captured attempting to drive the stolen Hyundai — with the kids inside — across the border, Delimitros said.

The children were not injured during the incident.
