Two people were run over and killed on Interstate 8, as a crashed driver and a would-be rescuer met a tragic end on the pavement in El Cajon early Sunday.

Either drugs or alcohol may be possible factors in the crash, though an investigation is ongoing, the California Highway Patrol said.

Around 1:20 a.m., a male driver crashed his car on eastbound Interstate 8, just before El Cajon Boulevard in El Cajon, California Highway Patrol Officer Travis Garrow said. The car involved came to rest in the second lane from the left of the freeway.

A passing motorist parked in the median near the crash, and was standing in the left lane with the crashed car’s driver, when the two were struck by another driver, Garrow said.

They both sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash.

A second would-be rescuer narrowly escaped injury.

The freeway was closed for several hours. Names of the two killed were not immediately released.
