A 46-year-old driver was seriously injured when he ran a red light and turned into the path of an oncoming car in Kearny Mesa, police said Monday.
It happened just before 10 p.m. Sunday when the driver of a 1999 Mercedes ran the red light while turning left from eastbound Clairemont Mesa Boulevard onto Convoy Street, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said. A Nissan Rogue traveling in the opposite direction on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard struck the passenger side of the Mercedes in the intersection.
Paramedics took the driver of the Mercedes to a hospital with serious injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening, Buttle said. There was no immediate information about any injuries to the 24-year-old man driving the Nissan.
Officers from the San Diego Police Department’s traffic division were investigating the crash and probing whether alcohol or drug impairment was a factor.
