A man who fell 100 feet into a canyon near University Heights suffered serious injuries and had to be hoisted out by helicopter, officials are reporting.

The dangerous tumble was reported shortly after noon Sunday when people near the incident in the 1600 block of Adams Avenue heard the man’s cries for help.

San Diego Fire-Rescue Department crews were called to the scene to perform the rescue along Mission Valley’s southern cliffs, the department reported via Twitter.

An SDFD helicopter hoisted the patient from the canyon and transported him to nearby Mercy Hospital, according to SDFD tweets.
