A woman who had her sights set on kayaking and fishing on Mission Bay Wednesday was forced to make other plans after her Audi convertible rolled into the water and became completely submerged.

The woman, whose name and age were unconfirmed by authorities, told a videographer at the scene that she backed the car down the South Shores boat launch, set the parking brake, and began to unload her gear when the vehicle started rolling. She jumped back in the car but was unable to drive forward, so she took a trip into the water instead, according to her account.

The Audi ended up in about 6 feet of water; the woman was able to escape and swim safely to shore shortly before 1 p.m.

The car was pulled from the water by a tow company and lifeguard divers, according to the videographer.

The estimated damage is unknown. The woman said she got the car in November.
