A pedestrian was struck and killed early this evening while trying to sprint across Interstate 5 in Otay Mesa, authorities reported.
The fatal accident occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. on the northbound side of the freeway, just south of Coronado Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
According to a witness, the victim was running across the traffic lanes to the west when a vehicle hit him, killing him at the scene. His name was not immediately available.
The fatality forced a closure of the centermost northbound lane in the immediate area, CHP public affairs Officer Mary Bailey said.
