A bomb scare closed the Old Town Transit Center during a busy Holiday Bowl rush Thursday night for nearly three hours.

The incident started around 9 p.m. when a police dog alerted officers to a suspicious package inside a trash bin. As a precaution, San Diego Police Department evacuated the station and shut down Taylor and Congress streets.

The Holiday Bowl had just ended and spectators were heading home from SDCCU Stadium, but many were stranded because police would not let people retrieve their cars from the Old Town Transit Center parking lot until the all clear.

A bus bridge ferried passengers between the Morena/Linda Vista and Washington Street stations. Police originally said the Old Town station would be closed for 30 minutes, but the closure lasted nearly three hours.

Police finally gave the all clear shortly before midnight.
