A nearly 20-minute police chase through east San Diego Tuesday night ended with the arrest of a driver who “was not in his right mind,” according to a San Diego police lieutenant.
The incident began around 5:15 p.m. in the 3600 block of Fairmount Avenue after a man driving a two-door sedan allegedly ran a red light and then failed to stop when a police officer attempted to pull him over, according to Lt. Dan Grubbs.
Back-up units were called in and spike strips used in an effort to disable the suspect’s car.
The slow-moving chase finally ended in the 5400 block of University Avenue, but the suspect had to be physically restrained during the arrest.
A preliminary investigation revealed the driver was under the influence and “suffering from some kind of excited delirium,” Grubbs said.
He was expected to be booked on driving under the influence and evading a police officer.
The suspect’s name was not immediately available.
No injuries were reported.
