Border Patrol agents patrolling Interstate 5 arrested a 35-year-old woman suspected of smuggling over $500,000 in currency from illegal drug sales, the agency reported Friday.
The arrest occurred at approximately 5 p.m. Wednesday on southbound I-5 near Oceanside. A search of the woman’s 2012 Jeep Cherokee revealed a suitcase filled with $532,596 in currency.
“This cash seizure denies transnational criminal organizations of illicit proceeds used to run criminal enterprise,” said Thomas Blanks, patrol agent in charge of the San Clemente Border Patrol Station.
The woman was arrested and turned over to agents from Homeland Security. The vehicle and currency were seized by the Border Patrol.
Coincidentally, the Border Patrol seized $290,000 in cash on the same highway on the same date last year.
