A man accused of fatally shooting a stranger in the back on a Linda Vista street pleaded not guilty Friday to charges of murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Orlando Javier Sanchez, 31, was ordered held on $2 million bail.
Sanchez, of San Diego, was arrested Wednesday for allegedly gunning down 23-year-old Jordy Lopez on Oct. 15, 2016, according to police.
Deputy District Attorney Alison Boutilier said the victim and the defendant came into contact with each other about 4 a.m. in the 2200 block of Comstock Street.
The defendant left to retrieve a gun and shot Lopez in the back before fleeing in a car, the prosecutor alleged.
Medics took Lopez to a hospital, where he died about four hours later.
Police did not disclose a suspected motive for the slaying or reveal what led detectives to identify Sanchez as the alleged killer.
Sanchez faces 50 years to life in prison if convicted. A readiness conference is set for Dec. 27 and a preliminary hearing for Dec. 29.
