A homicide investigation was underway after a person was reportedly gunned down on an Imperial Beach street Tuesday night.

The deadly shooting took place at Donax Avenue and Florence Street around 6:20 p.m, San Diego sheriff Lt. Karen Stubkjaer said.

“When (deputies) arrived, they located a Hispanic male down on the roadway,” she said. “Deputies and fire department tried life-saving measures but the male succumbed to his injuries.”

A man living in a nearby apartment complex described hearing multiple gunshots then seeing a man down in the street.

“I ran out, looked down the street and some people were screaming,” said the man, who asked not to be identified. “I grabbed some medical equipment, ran out but it was a little bit too late.”

The victim, a man in his 20s or 30s, was shot over a woman, said Baron Partlow, who claims to be an acquaintance of the victim. The shooter, a white man in his 30s, was not arguing with the victim when the shooting happened, he said.

“To the best of my knowledge, it was spontaneous,” Partlow said.

Authorities did not confirm the identity of the victim or the suspect, saying only that the victim died of an apparent gunshot wound.

There was an arrest made nearby on Palm Avenue and 10th Street, but authorities did not confirm if the man is a suspect in the killing.
