A suspected gang member stabbed a 60-year-old man in the East Village Monday after making a failed attempt to rob him, authorities reported.

The victim was selling cigarettes in the area of 13th Street and Imperial Avenue about 8:15 a.m. when the assailant — a short-haired man in his 20s, dressed all in black — rode by on a skateboard and tried to snatch money out of his hand, according to San Diego police.

After arguing with a bystander and shouting a gang challenge, the would- be thief stabbed the street merchant in the chest and fled, Officer Dino Delimitros said.

The victim was treated for a non-life-threatening wound.

Gang-unit detectives were called in to investigate the crime, Delimitros said.
