A man suspected of snatching a deposit bag from a customer at a downtown bank pleaded not guilty Friday to charges of robbery and misdemeanor resisting an officer.
Fathy Mohammad Abdusalam, 26, was ordered held on $150,000 bail.
San Diego Police said Abdusalam allegedly grabbed the bank bag from a pizza-shop manager at the Wells Fargo branch office in the 400 block of B Street and fled shortly before 9 a.m. Wednesday.
The victim ran after Abdusalam for several blocks, then flagged down a patrol officer, who took over the foot chase. The officer caught up with the suspect and arrested him in the 1100 block of Seventh Avenue, where Abdusalam allegedly was trying to steal an occupied vehicle, police said.
A prosecutor told Judge Laura Halgren that Abdusalam has engaged in “violent gang activity, ” including witness intimidation, since 2004.
The judge set a readiness conference for Sept. 19 and a preliminary hearing for Sept. 21.
