A car struck and severely injured an 89-year-old woman Tuesday as she tried to cross a North County thoroughfare, authorities reported.

The driver, a 90-year-old man, was trying to make a left turn from southbound Escondido Boulevard onto Felicita Avenue when his vehicle hit the pedestrian shortly after noon, according to police.

Medics took the woman, whose name was not released, to Palomar Medical Center for treatment of life-threatening injuries, Officer Frank Huston said.

It was not immediately clear who had the right of way at the time of the accident.
