The San Diego Police Department is planning another DUI checkpoint in its continuing effort to deter potential drunk and drugged drivers.
The DUI and license checkpoint will be in operation from 11 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday somewhere within the city limits at a location chosen because of past accidents and arrests.
Officers will be stopping drivers momentarily to check for signs of alcohol or drugs and confirm proper licensing. Those caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes and other expenses that can exceed $10,000.
The checkpoints are regularly announced in advance because this has a deterrent effect on drivers.
“Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized DUI checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely,” according to police.
Over the past three years, San Diego officers have investigated 2005 DUI collisions which have claimed 42 lives and resulted in thousands of injuries.
