Firefighters Wednesday subdued a brush fire that blackened an estimated 81 open acres in the northwest reaches of Camp Pendleton.
The blaze erupted for unknown reasons about 11:45 p.m. Tuesday east of San Onofre State Beach, between Basilone and Cristianitos roads, USMC Lance Cpl. Brooke Woods said. No buildings were threatened and no injuries reported.
Crews had the spread of the flames halted by about 4 a.m., Woods said.
Smoke from the fire still hung in the air after sunrise, according to base officials.
Military firefighters and Orange County Fire Authority personnel had the burn area roughly 80 percent contained as of late morning, USMC officials reported.
